The European EMS Championship is a fun, challenging and educational experience for emergency medical personnel. The competition is all about team work, skills, experience and the ability to find a solution when challenged. The competition will be scenario-based events that test each team’s ability to manage patients in various circumstances with common critical medical conditions and trauma.

All teams will compete in two preliminary rounds. The 3 teams with the highest scores from the preliminary rounds will compete in the finals at a spectacular full-scale scenario in the plenary hall.

Frequently asked questions

How to apply?

All interested teams must send a short application to no later than 2 February 2020.

Application Guidelines

  • Applications must be submitted in English
  • The application must not exceed 250 words
  • The application must be accompanied by an official letter of support from the organisation e.g. the medical director
  • The application must contain organisation, country and motivation for participation

The application will be reviewed by the Championship Committee. Sponsors will not participate in the selection. All teams will receive an answer mid-February 2020 and can register at the Early Bird registration rate.

Teams that have not registered for the congress before 20 February 2020 will be excluded from the competition. Instead the first team on a prioritised waiting list will get the possibility of competing.

Who can participate?

Prehospital healthcare professionals from around the world can sign up for the European EMS Championship. All teams must include a team leader plus two additional team members. All team members must be registered doctors, paramedics, EMTs, nurses or allied health care professionals. As professional EMS providers please consider a backup option for your team members.

The championship language is English, meaning all communication must be done in English – both when it comes to communication between team leader and instructor as well as internal communication between team members. This enables the judges to complete a fair assessment and make the competition more relevant for spectators.

Registration for EMS2020 in Scotland and participation in the EMS2020 Dinner Party is mandatory for participating teams. There are no additional costs for entry into the competition.

What should you bring?

All team members are required to wear uniforms during the competition and at the award ceremony. The award ceremony will be held during the EMS2020 Dinner Party on 26 May 2020.

Each team can bring their own prehospital kits/bags. Medications (real drugs or placebos) must be labeled with the correct medication name and dosage. Please remember to bring extra medications and supplies to replenish kits/bags after the preliminary competition.

EMS2020 will provide additional equipment including monitor/defibrillator for all teams to use throughout the competition. A list with the exact equipment will be provided for all teams.

What will the scenarios be like?

During the preliminary round the teams will compete in two simulated scenarios, both of these will be within the area of what prehospital healthcare professionals can encounter in a real life scenario. An experienced simulation instructor will present the clinical setting and conduct the scenario. Each scenario will be assessed by judges who will assess the medical as well as the teamwork performance based on standardized assessment forms.

The final round will be a full scale simulated scenario with more complex challenges in the plenary hall.

Who will be the judges?

The judges will be experienced healthcare professionals who either work prehospital or with advanced medical education. The judges will be selected to avoid a conflict of interest with the participating teams.

What can your team win?

All participating teams will have the honor of being brave and will learn from this experience. The winning team will have the honour of being the best EMS team of the year and take home the EMS Championship trophy as well as free congress passes for EMS2021.
